Smart pay packages for a changing IT skills trend

Debris of a global recession that created turbulence in the economy has gradually settled down and corporate circle has started to talk about payment packages in big figures yet again. Well, the circles have come up with three phrases - Pay for Skills, Pay for Performance and Pay for Knowledge that refer to new performance-based reward systems that are replacing seniority-based reward systems as the demand for a more knowledgeable, more highly skilled and more flexible work force increases.
Smart pay packages for a changing IT skills trend

In a country well known for the stark difference in pay packages for almost the same level of expertise at different cities or firms, defining the salary packages for the hottest IT skills is never an easy task. But as we go through the most sought after IT domains, the picture of a general trend in salary packages in this year can be sketched out. As the drift reads, companies are offering attractive pay packages to personnel in domains like Java professionals, database experts and business analysts.

According to payscale.com, entry level Java personnel with less than a year experience seem to manage a salary somewhere between 2,48,000-2,50,000 which increase to around 3,65,000 if you posses experience anywhere between 1-4 years and more than 13 lakh per annum on an average once you hold an experience of 10+ years. Again differentiating on the median salary by job, a Software Engineer / Developer / Programmer gets paid around 3,30,000 per annum while Sr. Software Engineer / Developer / Programmer gets paid near to 5,44,000 and Project Managers for Information Technology and Software development receive anywhere between 10 lakh and 12 lakh rupees. Bonuses have also increased this year with IT consultants getting 40,000+ bonuses per annum whereas PMs again manage to milk 1 lakh plus bonuses.

Business Analyst (BA) plays a vital role in coordinating IT and the business process of big corporations or institutions. They play a vital role in appraising technology to better the business needs of the corporation and a business analyst salary is in accordance to this great responsibility. Business Analysts seem to be a workforce who plays around with their salary figures with wide contrast in pay packages across the country. Fresh entry level business analysts are offered a minimum of 20,000 to a maximum of 25,000 per month according to myjobstreet.com, while Senior Business Analysts (Computer Software/Hardware/Systems) manages a salary between 5,78,000 - 1,016,000 per annum apart from bonuses ranging from 42,000-1,02,000 and a profit sharing between 12,000-52,000.

All firms in the ever-changing information technology sector need highly qualified and experienced database administrators (DBAs) who would not only manage, maintain and develop databases, but also formulate policies for ensuring the security of the company database. So what kind of remuneration awaits them? In India, database administrators at entry levels gets paid around an average of 1,35,000 - 301,000 per annum. Mid-level employees are paid somewhere between 4,71,000-8,29,000 and senior level executives paid at around 5,84,000 - 1,155,000. Again the salary packages changes with cities and DBAs in Delhi seem to get paid more than those in Bangalore and Mumbai.

However, as jobs change and become more complex, employees have to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform these jobs to move forward as their companies move forward. As jobs change and training is provided, companies are linking the acquisition of job knowledge and job skills to pay for performance systems designed to stimulate employee growth and development. So in a country where a person gets a 15 lakh pay package and another person with the same skills gets paid 5 lakh, it is always advised to keep updating oneself with new skills and training programs and thereby making your pay hike perspectives active.
